THEORY

At Opus 1, we believe that a deep understanding of music theory is the key to mastering performance. Through our Music Theory course, students will explore the techniques used by composers throughout the centuries and apply these methods to their own compositions. Whether you're aiming to excel in ABRSM, AP Music Theory, or college entrance exams, our comprehensive lessons will give you the skills and confidence you need to succeed.

Our program offers three courses designed to deepen your understanding of music theory and practical application:

Music Theory and Practice I

  • Develop a foundation in aural skills, rhythm, and harmony.

  • Key topics: Music fundamentals, triad and tetrachord identification, Roman numeral analysis, diatonic voice-leading, counterpoint, form, and rhythmic dictation.

  • Daily aural practice required using Teoria (30-50 exercises weekly).

  • Final Project: Analyze three pieces of repertoire and connect theory to musical expression.

Music Theory and Practice II

  • Build on foundational knowledge with a focus on chromatic harmony, modulation, and 20th-century techniques.

  • Key topics: Four-part dictation, chromatic voice-leading, atonality, poly-rhythms, form, and text setting.

  • Final Project: Compose a piece utilizing theoretical concepts with accompanying prose.

Music Theory Projects (Repeatable)

  • Advanced course for those who’ve completed Music Theory I & II.

  • Explore higher-level concepts like microtonality, Neo-Riemannian theory, serialism, and more.

  • Final Project: Compose a large work, present a lecture, and perform with peers.
